Where is and what is the Clean Water Act when we need it?

As to your immediate needs, pure fresh drinking water for your home is essential. Purchasing all those plastic drinking bottles are not the answer. What we spend in the US on bottled water would take care of the worlds needs. Not to account for the reality of that entire plastic most often ending up in landfills. There is a better way. A pure water filter that clears your water, then refill the correct type of water bottle at home. Good for environment, good for you and family.

Go Green and Get a Healthy Home and Family

When I find a site that really needs to get the word out, I like to expose them through our Goes Green Site.

A Google Search for home environmental toxins brought me to the site Healthy Children Project. They talk about the exposures of environmental toxins and how they adversely effect development and health. Some of the consequences are Developmental and learning disabilities linked to exposure to environmental toxins.

The key is knowledge and the ACTION. What you can do to reduce exposure to environmental toxins in your home and community. They have a Quiz and a wealth of important information. Please take some time to go to: Healthy Children Project.

Then the Laundry which later I discovered was more important than I thought. My allergies we so sever and here I had been wearing clothing that was covering my skin which is known to be the largest organ for elimination but also for assimilation of all the toxins.

Whew, no wonder I had such problems with emotions, headaches and itching. So Non Toxic and fragrence free detergants were fully established in our home and center.

Of course we already had green water filters, had been doing that for years. Pure water is the essence of all life. How’s your home water?

There must be room for all or their will be no room for us in the end.

We created a delightful yard, front and back, side to side with plants and bamboo, shrubby and feeders for the critters that migrate through the Pacific NW. What a labor of love, it’s such a gift to watch our feathered friends, squirrels and such. No we don’t miss not having a lawn. At first the neighbors were concerned, especially when the bamboo went in. People would come and stare as we changed the big lawns to a natural state.

But we did our homework FIRST and did everything so that not a bug or critter was hurt. Not only thinking organic, but there is a lot more to it. Now my neighbors come by to get flowers and organic vegetables, to comment on the glorious birds that come and go.

You too can do something to help our feathered friends. Why not get creative and do some small thing to make a difference. You’ll be glad you did.

Dangers of Toxic Cleaning Supplies

Using Google Seaerch I easily found Green Web Site. I'd suggest you save in your favorites, It has excellent articles. The first I found, much to my delight was:

In order to asses the level of consumer awareness about the potential dangers of toxic home cleaning products (and no doubt to support their own product development and marketing efforts), the pioneering natural products company Our Goes Green Company commissioned a Harris Interactive poll.

Harris called 1,108 moms across the U.S. with children under the age of 18 living at home. The results are interesting:

95% of moms agreed that household cleaning products can be made of toxic ingredients
61% agreed that the fumes from cleaning products bothered them
81% of the respondents agreed that household cleaning products may trigger asthma in children and adults
Despite this, 70% claimed they thought home cleaning products are safe to use around their own family anyway
Only 49% said they were worried that their own children may be exposed to household toxins when products are used as directed
Only 38% agreed with the EPA's scientifically supported claim that indoor air tends to be more toxic than outdoor air
Even so, 94% of moms said they would stop using their favorite cleaning product if they found out it may be harmful to their families' health

These results show that parents are definitely concerned about the possible negative effects of chemicals they use in the home, yet they are still not educated enough about the dangers of indoor air quality in general. Further, the lack of clear association between using common toxic chemicals and any possible adverse effects goes to show why the natural products industry has had uphill growth in recent decades.

Major consumer brands that have been heavily advertised for years, and those which grew out of the shiny postwar era have deeply embedded themselves in the American psyche. These days, more parents are choosing to play it safe around the house, and look for more natural green cleaning alternatives, but more education is needed.

Is your home a Goes Green Home? If not, and that’s ok, don’t beat yourself up. Just get started, one step at a time.

Gas Saving Tips #1

Across this country and beyond, we complain about gas prices but ..

Are we doing what we can to make each drop count? Lets look at these ideas from Gas Saving Tips

ENGINE WARM-UP

1. Avoid prolonged warming up of engine, even on cold mornings - 30 to 45 seconds is plenty of time.
2. Be sure the automatic choke is disengaged after engine warm up... chokes often get stuck,
resulting in bad gas/air mixture.

3. Don't start and stop engine needlessly. Idling your engine for one minute consumes the
gas amount equivalent to when you start the engine.

4. Avoid "reving" the engine, especially just before you switch the engine off; this wastes fuel needlessly and washes oil down from the inside cylinder walls, owing to loss of oil pressure.

5. Eliminate jack-rabbit starts. Accelerate slowly when starting from dead stop. Don't push pedal down more than 1/4 of the total foot travel. This allows
carburetor to function at peak efficiency.

HOW TO BUY GASOLINE

6. Buy gasoline during coolest time of day - early morning or late evening is best. During these times
gasoline is densest. Keep in mind - gas pumps measure volumes of gasoline, not densities of fuel concentration. You are charged according to "volume of measurement".

7. Choose type and brand of gasoline carefully. Certain brands provide you with greater economy because of better quality. Use the brands which "seem" most beneficial.

8. Avoid filling gas tank to top. Overfilling results in sloshing over and out of tank. Never fill gas tank past the first "click" of fuel nozzle, if nozzle is automatic.

HOW TO DRIVE ECONOMICALLY

9. Exceeding 40 mph forces your auto to overcome tremendous wind resistance.

10. Never exceed legal speed limit. Primarily they are set for your traveling safety, however better gas efficiency also occurs. Traveling at 55 mph give you up to 21% better mileage when compared to former legal speed limits of 65 mph and 70 mph.

11. Traveling at fast rates in low gears can consume up to 45% more fuel than is needed.

12. Manual shift driven cars allow you to change to highest gear as soon as possible, thereby letting you save gas if you "nurse it along". However, if you cause the engine to "bog down", premature wearing of engine parts occurs.

13. Keep windows closed when traveling at highway speeds. Open windows cause air drag, reducing your mileage by 10%.

14. Drive steadily. Slowing down or speeding up wastes fuel. Also avoid tailgating - the driver in front of you is unpredictable. Not only is it unsafe, but if affects your economy, if he slows down unexpectedly.

15.Think ahead when approaching hills. If you accelerate, do it before you reach the hill, not while you're on it.

Save Energy and Improve the Environment by: Environmental News

You can lower your monthly energy bill and contribute to a cleaner environment without making major changes or buying expensive energy-saving gadgets. Simple changes, and thought given to energy reduction, will make a significant difference.

Dish Washing

If washing dishes by hand, fill one basin with warm soapy water and the other with cold rinse water. This saves much more water than leaving the cold water running for rinsing.
If you're using the dishwasher, pre-rinse dishes with cold water. Be sure machine is full, but not overloaded.

Turn off automatic air-dry switch, and let dishes dry by air. If your machine doesn't have an air-dry switch, turn off the control knob after the final rinse and prop the door open a bit so the dishes will dry faster.

If a small load, avoid using "Rinse-Hold". This uses 3 to 7 gallons of hot water each time it's used.
Check the manual that came with your dishwasher for the manufacturer's recommendations on water temperature; many have internal heating elements that allow you to set the water heater in your home to a lower temperature (115 degrees).

Microwave

Microwaves use between one-fifth and one-half as much energy as conventional stoves.
Microwaves are most efficient at cooking small portions and for defrosting.

Food cooks faster when placed on the outer edges of a rotating tray rather than in the center, allowing more microwaves to interact with the food.

Food cooks faster in a microwave as the surface-to-volume ratio increases. When cooking potatoes, for example, thinner slices will cook faster than cubed or quartered sections.

During warm weather, microwave use minimizes radiant heat build-up from the kitchen.

This table from the Consumer Guide to Home Energy Savings compares the cost of cooking a casserole in several ways. It assumes the cost of gas is $.60 a therm, and electricity is $.08 a kWh.

Gas and Electric Ranges

Gas stoves with an electric ignition (piezo) will use 40% less gas than one with a continuous pilot light. Burner flames on gas stoves should be blue. If flame is yellow, the ports need to be unclogged or adjusted. Ports can often be cleaned with a pipe cleaner.

When using the oven, try to reduce the number of times you open the door while cooking. Each time the door is opened, the stove loses about 1/4th of its heat.

Match pot size to burner size on your stove top. Heat is lost and energy is wasted if burner size is larger than pot size. Also, clean range-top burners and reflectors to better reflect the heat, and save energy.

Use pressure cookers. They use 50-75 percent less energy than ordinary cookware.
On electric stovetops, use flat-bottomed pans that make full contact with the elements.
If you cook on an electric range, you can turn off the burners or the oven before the cooking is finished, because it will take several minutes for the burners to lose their heat.

Induction cooking uses 90% of the energy produced compared to only 55% for a gas burner and 65% for traditional electric ranges.

Induction cooking is based on magnetic fields: each ‘element’ (an induction coil) generates a magnetic field that induces heat in steel cookware placed on top of it. In essence, the pot becomes the element that cooks the food, so the cooktop surface doesn’t get as hot as other cooktops. Induction cooktops have the same instant control as gas and are the fastest of all cooktop types to heat and cook food

It carries extremely relevant information for those understanding the importance of Goes Green philosophy. We have ONE plant, and it’s our responsibility to do our best to care for it. I’ve personally saved a lot of money as well, although at first glance I didn’t think I would when comparing the goes green type products I got at the food co-op and my grocery store. However most eco friendly products are not using water as the first ingredient.

What does Green Clean mean?

Well let us take a look at some of the components for the concept Goes Green:
1. Nontoxic
2. Natural
3. Biodegradable
4. Hypoallergenic
5. No phosphates
6. No chlorine bleach
7. No chlorine bleach
8. Not tested on animals
9. For many fragrance FREE is vital, some people natural fragrance is tolerable
10. Highly concentrated so as few containers are used as possible
11. Containers for products that are recyclable
12. Order through internet to save on driving and unnecessary use of gas/fuel for your car

For me, non toxic fragrance free, fits my concepts of running a Goes Green home. It is always convenient and delivered right to my door. I’m finding I’m saving money, mostly on the highly concentrated products: for example – laundry, dishwasher soaps, kitchen cleaners and such. I also save gas and time not having to drive for that forgotten item that I would have run out of. Well, it makes a BIG difference.

I put a lot less into the recycle bins or garbage cans, save $ and time. When we decided to become a Goes Green home, I had no idea how passionate I would become as I did my research with Google on environmental issues. Now I'm equally passionate on helping others make a good income from home while helping others themselves. What goes around comes around.

Home Internet Biz - is it for YOU?

I had the nicest surprise this morning as the UPS man brought my non toxic cleaning supplies. I love the choice to have auto ship of those things I use on a regular basis. It always feels good to be restocking the family shelves with truly healthy cleaning supplies, laundry soaps and vitamins and herbal supplements. But something I hadn’t noticed was the packaging. They use as many of you know a soft pillow like plastic air filled bags and the bags are #2 which mean they are recyclable. Just pop them, releasing the air and then place bags into your recycling bins.

And amazement … I just checked the nutritional supplements I ordered, yes, the bottles have #2 on the bottom so remove the lids and put those in recycle bin as well. Excitedly I ran around the house and was so happy to find that all the cleaning supplies, like laundry plastic pump bottle, hand soaps, dish washer dispenser, vitamans and more; all are recyclable. Wow, I was first a user of the Eco Friendly Products but even now, as a Distributor, I hadn’t realized the great commitment our company goes to as to be Eco Friendly. They are Goes Green all the way! Now that is something I can really support.

Not only is everything recyclable and thus these packing materials and plastic bottles are not filing up our landfills.

Coal energy is the primary source of electrical energy in US and a huge contributor to the global warming that is leading us head long into an environment that is hostel for living in.

Burning coal is a leading cause of smog, acid rain, global warming, and air toxics. In an average year, a typical coal plant generates:

3,700,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2), the primary human cause of global warming--as much carbon dioxide as cutting down 161 million trees.

10,000 tons of sulfur dioxide (SO2), which causes acid rain that damages forests, lakes, and buildings, and forms small airborne particles that can penetrate deep into lungs.

500 tons of small airborne particles, which can cause chronic bronchitis, aggravated asthma, and premature death, as well as haze obstructing visibility.

Air pollution: Burning coal causes smog, soot, acid rain, global warming, and toxic air emissions.
Wastes generated: Ash, sludge, toxic chemicals, and waste heat create more environmental problems.
Fuel supply: Mining, transporting, and storing coal levels mountains and pollutes the land, water, and air.
Water use: Coal plants need billions of gallons of cooling water and harm wildlife.

Solid Waste

Waste created by a typical 500-megawatt coal plant includes more than 125,000 tons of ash and 193,000 tons of sludge from the smokestack scrubber each year. Nationally, more than 75% of this waste is disposed of in unlined, unmonitored onsite landfills and surface impoundments.

Toxic substances in the waste -- including arsenic, mercury, chromium, and cadmium -- can contaminate drinking water supplies and damage vital human organs and the nervous system. One study found that one out of every 100 children who drink groundwater contaminated with arsenic from coal power plant wastes were at risk of developing cancer. Ecosystems too have been damaged -- sometimes severely or permanently -- by the disposal of coal plant waste.

Much of the heat produced from burning coal is wasted. A typical coal power plant uses only 33-35% of the coal's heat to produce electricity. The majority of the heat is released into the atmosphere or absorbed by the cooling water.

Wind power generates electricity with... Once the 2.2 billion gallons of water have cycled through the coal-fired power plant, they are released back into the lake, river, or ocean. This water is hotter (by up to 20-25° F) than the water that receives it. This "thermal pollution" can decrease fertility and increase heart rates in fish.

Typically, power plants also add chlorine or other toxic chemicals to their cooling water to decrease algae growth. These chemicals are also discharged back into the environment.

Wind power can reduce pollution generated by fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas. A typical (750 kW) wind turbine provides enough power for 328 typical (non-electric heating) homes.

Of course, windpower does require land for siting turbines. Some people don't like the way wind turbines look. Others find them visually appealing. A few wind projects have harmed some birds. And some pollution is produced when wind turbines are manufactured and installed, as with all energy options.

By demonstrating that renewable energy solutions are sustainable both environmentally and economically, we aim to enact federal and state policies that support renewable energy, reduce barriers to the adoption of renewable technologies, and encourage all energy purchasers to use renewables.

United States' Bottled water classifications

Bottled water manufacturers in the United States must ensure that their products meet the FDA established standard of identity for bottled water products.

Take a Stand - Drilling for Oil / Gas Where????

The Bush administration is poised to allow two giant energy companies to drill exploratory oil and gas wells up to 14,000 feet beneath Colorado's spectacular Baca National Wildlife Refuge. Last year, BioGems Defenders and other NRDC online activists sent more than 48,000 messages protesting this destructive drilling scheme. Despite this outcry, the Bush administration is moving forward with the plan, which could pave the way for massive industrialization of the Baca Refuge.

The Baca refuge is an important calving ground for deer and elk and provides a natural sanctuary for imperiled wildlife, including the ferruginous hawk, the threatened burrowing owl, the greater and lesser sandhill crane and the Rio Grande sucker, an endangered fish. Over 4,000 elk depend on the area for critical winter habitat and calving grounds to shelter newborns.

Thousands of migrating birds visit the refuge each spring and fall, and hundreds of ancient Native American artifacts lie buried under ancient layers of sand. World-class archeological sites dating back some 11,500 years have been found nearby. The proposed drilling project threatens to transform this irreplaceable wild land into an industrial zone – contaminating air, land and waterways and unleashing a barrage of drilling-related traffic and noise.

Even the adjacent Great Sand Dunes National Park could be at risk. Energy companies currently own the rights to oil and gas reserves beneath the refuge. But the Bush administration has the authority to block reckless and destructive industrialization on these lands.

Disposal of electronic equipment such as older computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, etc., is becoming a larger problem every day. It is increasingly common that you may have to pay to properly dispose of many types of older equipment. The non profit organizations listed below are primarily interested in receiving equipment that they can either use or resell, and are not interested in receiving equipment that they themselves will just have to pay to dispose of.

Many states have passed laws that prohibit the dumping of items such as monitors, computers and printers, and are requiring that these items be properly disposed of. If you cannot find a non profit organization that will accept your equipment at no charge, we encourage you to contact a recycling center, such as the ones listed at the bottom of this page, to properly dispose of your equipment.

Can I Read it? Should I Eat it?

I loved that commercial with two little boys trying to read the label of some ice cream brand. One was simple words and the other label was unpronounceable. Hmm, it caught me off guard that day and left me thinking. I found myself more often going around the house looking at labels and cruising the stores for foods, cleaning supplies and nutritional products. I found there sure were a lot of L-O-N-G words I couldn’t pronounce let alone understand.

It drives me nuts - going to the mail box and finding it FULL of unwanted and definityly uneeded junk mail. Recycling it helps but doens't stop the endlesss flow, dropping it back to the post office only gets in in either the garbage or recycle and when I contacted compinies myself, well I can only assume it got my name sold to others mailing lists as the amount of junk mail increased.

Water Water Everywhere with Goes Green

Growing up on Vashon Island in Puget Sound, NW Washington – well – water was taken as a given. It was all around me in the many streams and rivers and if you know anything about Washington State; it rains much of the year. Our snow packs in the mountains are impressive and bring us more water than we need as a state, with plenty to share. We are a very wet state, green, lush and alive with many animals, plants, awesome trees and sea creatures. Don’t forget our bodies are almost all water as well. Sweet pure water is not just nice to have but a necessity for health. Fresh pure water for the home is very important to nourish our bodies.

Nothing is sweeter than our pure water flowing down from Mount Rainer. But I was unaware of the awesome gift we had until much later in life when two things came into play. One was the Television coming into our home. That certainly opened up my limited knowledge at the time; the other was traveling to different areas of not only the US but other countries as well.

Let’s talk facts and tips for water usage.

My most important teacher was my Girl Scout leader who took us from early grade school through high school (yes it was ‘cool’ to be a girl scout!) Mary always brought to us the concepts of caring for the land (leave any area better than the way we found it). Even then she taught us to use bio-degradable soaps when washing dishes while camping and to dump that gray water away from the creeks and streams. Believe it or not, the average water usage per person per day is 200 gallons and
here's how...

Showering wet down, soap up, rinse off = 4 gallons
Brushing teeth wet brush, rinse briefly, = ½ gallon
Shaving, fill sink basin = 1 gallon
Washing hands fill sink basin = 1 gallon
Tub bath minimal water level = 10 to 12 gallons
Flushing toilet using a smaller tank = 4 to 6 gallons
Dishwashing washing and rinsing in the sink = 5 gallons
Automatic dishwasher short cycle = 7 gallons
Washing machine short cycle with minimal water level = 27 gallons
Outdoor watering average hose = 10 gallons per minute
Leaks - even a small drip can add up to 25 gallons per day

The above gallon usage is calculated minimally. You can count on using quite a bit more if you leave the water running while brushing your teeth, shaving, washing the dishes, using old toilets that require more water, running the dishwasher and washing machines on longer cycles and filling the bath tub to the top. Remember, water is not cheap or limitless. Please use this natural resource wisely and save on your water bill. Water Usage - Can We Go Green?

Growing up on a small island called Vashon in the Pacific NW of Washington State; it never occured to me how precious water was and is. We had it around us, dropping from the famous wet skies of Washington, rushing rivers and snow packed mountains. Our water tasts like a bit of heaven as it cascades down from Mt. Raineer. But my Girl Scout leader, year after year as we camped or hiked thought the Cascade Mountains, would remind us to care for the water and the land, that it was our responsibility. We used non toxic, bio-degradable soaps for dishes and washing even back in the late 50'2. Honestly I didn't even begin to really understand that until much later in life. Now I realize that certain types of detergants have great impact on quality of water and the life of those that live in the water. Just watch your Discovery Channel on TV for some good visual imforamation.

When television was introduced I started to get a picture of what water ment to other people through out the world and it was astonisihing. Imagin, not having fresh water to drink or all you wanted to bath or water a garden with. Well our world is getting smaller every day and so is the usable water. Not only how much water we use, what we recycle and what we put into it is affectiong many people beyond our own neighborhoods. The world is now our neighborhood. Lets be environmently friendly!

Little Shifts Make a Big Difference

Sometimes while watching the Discovery Channel, they show environmental reality right into our front rooms. Glaciers melting, animals fighting for survival, the wide spread affects of global warming .... right into our front room; right into our faces and it's no longer "out there somewhere, some place far from our family or yours".

But what can I/We do that really makes a difference. When feeling overwhelmed it is
often we tend to do nothing, as if paralyzed like a deer in the head lights or like the concept "I don't see the elephant standing in my front room".

Well, here are just a few ideas and the why!

First rule for success .... make small changes and start TODAY.

1. We use on an average 22,ooo paper napkins per person per year. That is 6 2ply napkins person equaling 1 Billion pounds of paper waste going to landfills each year. Action step: Switch to cloth napkins. Go to your local thrift store, dollar store or even Wal-Mart. I found 4 simple yet pretty white napkins for $2.69. We invested in 4 sets (16) for only $10.76 plus tax. When soiled they just go into the laundry with our Goes Green laundry detergent which is non toxic to the earth. Job done!

2. Bottled Water .... wow ... now that is something the average family uses often for both connivance and health issues. The money we spend on bottled water in the US each year is outrageous. With it we could have fresh clean water for every person in the world. Now that is BIG! Action step: Get reusable water bottles (often available in co-op health stores, REI or other Out-Door camping stores) or recycle something you bought juice in (food safe). I found a wonderful bottle at my REI camping store that has a filter (with extra filters) which is even safe to fill from streams and lakes while hiking, let alone from my kitchen sink. 7 Simple Changes

1. Paper or Plastic? Neither!!!! Bring your own bags to reuse over and over. I've several large cotton bags and even a few smaller ones, all washable, in my car. No more needing to tear down trees that we need for Oxygen or the pollution caused by all the plastic. In some countries this is the only way you can bring home something from the store. Or even have your own cardboard boxes if you'd prefer!

2. Energy efficient light bulbs saves a lot of electricity BUT it does much more. Most of the energy in the US still comes from coal burning and that has a huge affect on green house gasses.

3. NO paper napkins in our home "thank you" ... easy to get cotton ones, 4 for under $3 at Walmart. I hadn't realized how many we were going through until we stopped using them all together.

4. Purchase only NON toxic cleaning supplies. They are cheaper $$$$ because much more concintrated as well. Read the labels and descriptions. Impressive ... read about reports of quality.

5. Check the weather striping around doors and even windows. Put a soft rubber piece at the bottom of any door that leaks, example: going out into the garage. We found several areas leaking cold air $$$ and environmental resources slipping out of our home!

6. Purchase wisely. Look for items with as little packaging as possible. Milk cartons and cardboard are better for recycling. Don't know what can be recycled in your area. Contact your garbage service and they will send you information on what is acceptable in your area. That helps you make wiser purchasing decisions. Also buy in Bulk when you can; breaking that down into smaller sizes for your family. We found purchasing meats and grains, flours and beans, for example; then put them into smaller sizes with our seal a meal save a lot of $$$ and environment resources.

7. Time to let go of the 'connivance' of paper plates and cups! Yikes, that took me for a moment until I realized how much damage it was doing and the waisted $$$ --- so --- take a trip to a dollar store for some plastic re washable plates and cups, or a second hand store often has them if you don't mind mismatched colors. Most stores sell plastic plates and such with the paper ones, so you could get the better quality and wash them over and over. We host a lot of gatherings here and it has really been noticed how much we have saved. Also got rid of those handy little bathroom cups, just need to take my time to keep each family members cup clean.

The Greenhouse Effect

First let’s take a look at what a green house is. Many people use large and small ones in their gardens for growing flowers and vegetables throughout the year. A green house is usually made of glass or special fiberglass can get the sunlight and warmth they need to thrive.

As the sun shines it warms the greenhouse and keeps the heat contained, providing the appropriate environment for the plants.

The Earth too is like a greenhouse as we are surrounded by an layer of invisible gases (such as carbon dioxide, mixed with other gasses). As the sun shines it passes through the gas layer and begins to trap the heat the same as if it were a roof over the earth. This is an important part to the cycle as we need warmth and light for growth.

However because of poor planning and unwillingness to change the old ways we used fusel fuels, our earth is now overheating. Cars, factories, power plants, the burning of wood and coal, over use of raising cattle and even the cutting down of large tracks of trees bring more new gasses being trapped in this layer surrounding the earth. Of course this also traps the sun’s heat leading to what we call green house effect or global warming.

Drive Smart!
A well-tuned car with properly inflated tires burns less gasoline—cutting pollution and saving you money at the pump. If you have two cars, drive the one with better gas mileage whenever possible. Better yet, skip the drive and take public transit, walk, or bicycle when you can.

Buy Local and Organic
Did you know the average American meal travels more than 1,500 miles from the farm to your plate? Think of all the energy wasted and pollution added to the atmosphere - not to mention all the pesticides and chemicals used to grow most produce! So go to your local organic farmer to get your fruits and veggies.

Support clean, renewable energy.
Renewable energy solutions, such as wind and solar power, can reduce our reliance on coal-burning power plants, the largest source of global warming pollution in the United States. Call your local utility and sign up for renewable energy. If they don't offer it, ask them why not?
Also, support a national renewable electricity standard (RES). The Energy Bill signed in 2007 lacked key components that address our energy security and global warming emissions: a renewable electricity standard of 15% by 2020 and a tax package that will provide investment incentives for clean energy alternatives. Use our action center to urge your members of congress to support the renewable electricity standard and tax package!

Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs.
Especially those that burn the longest each day. Compact fluorescents produce the same amount of light as normal bulbs, but use about a quarter of the electricity and last ten times as long. Each switch you make helps clean the air today, curb global warming, and save you money on your electricity bill.

Saving energy at home is good for the environment and for your wallet.
Start with caulking and weather-stripping on doorways and windows. Then adjust your thermostat and start saving. For each degree you lower your thermostat in the winter, you can cut your energy bills by 3 percent. Finally, ask your utility company to do a free energy audit of your home to show you how to save even more money.

Become a smart water consumer.Install low-flow showerheads and faucets and you'll use half the water without decreasing performance. Then turn your hot water heater down to 120°F and see hot-water costs go down by as much as 50 percent.

Buy energy-efficient electronics and appliances.Replacing an old refrigerator or an air conditioner with an energy-efficient model will save you money on your electricity bill and cut global warming pollution. Look for the Energy Star label on new appliances or visit their website at http://www.energystar.gov/ to find the most energy-efficient products.

Plant a Tree, protect a forest.Protecting forests is a big step on the road to curbing global warming. Trees "breathe in" carbon dioxide, but slash-and-burn farming practices, intensive livestock production, and logging have destroyed 90 percent of the native forests in the United States. And you can take action in your own backyard — planting shade trees around your house will absorb CO2, and slash your summer air-conditioning bills.

Reduce! Reuse! Recycle!Producing new paper, glass, and metal products from recycled materials saves 70 to 90 percent of the energy and pollution, including CO2, that would result if the product came from virgin materials. Recycling a stack of newspapers only 4 feet high will save a good-sized tree. Please...buy recycled products!

Mount a local campaign against global warming.Educate your community about how it can cut global warming pollution. Support measures at the national, state, and local level that:
Make automobiles go further on a gallon of gas; Accelerate the use of clean, renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind; Increase energy efficiency and conservation; and
Preserve forests around the world.
